Health Products: An Alternative to Medicine?

There are some health products that work better than prescribed medicines, but is that a reason to ignore traditional medicine? The answer to that question is an emphatic no; medicine should not be ignored for natural remedies. Using natural products in conjunction with traditional medicine is something for you and your doctor to discuss. That being said there are health products that can work in conjunction with regular medicine or instead of as determined to be safe by your physician.

Working hand in hand

If you suffer from insomnia and sedatives leave you feeling more tired than when you went to sleep, you might want to discuss the use of a natural alternative like Melatonin with your doctor. Since Melatonin is a natural product there are very few to no side effects and might work better for you. Echinacea is a natural health product that boosts your immune system as well as improves your blood flow; you can find Echinacea lozenges in your grocery store. Since Echinacea does improve your blood flow you will want to consult with your doctor if you are taking a blood thinner such as Coumadin or Lovinax. There are also supplements that will improve joint health; Glucosamine for example is reported to improve joint health and is used to help treat osteoarthritis. While Glucosamine can help to improve joint pain and is less costly and less painful than cortisone shots, it should also be discussed with your doctor.

The lack of side effects

Using a natural product might be easier on your body in terms of side effects, but that does not mean it is a replacement for traditional medicine. The importance of discussing the possibility of using a natural alternative with your doctor cannot be stressed enough, and you will find that many doctors are willing to discuss the use of natural health products.
